SMW 104 Federal Credit Union offers two credit card types; Visa® Classic, which come with credit lines up to $5,000 and Visa® Platinum with credit lines up to $25,000.  Card types are determined by your credit worthiness.  Both card types can be used to transfer the balance to payoff your high-rate credit cards.  Simply contact the credit union for a balance transfer form or click the link below to print one.  You may return your completed form using our secure email option by navigating to the Contact Us page.

In order to assist you with questions concerning a transaction decline outside our normal business hours, we added a 24/7-365 service called Transaction Assistance Line.  Most questions concerning the nature of your decline can be answered in minutes.  In most cases, the analyst can update the account to allow approval of the transaction (some restrictions may apply).

Here’s an example of what the service looks like in action.  You might receive a text message similar to this: 

 

Guardian Alert on card 1234¹ at XYZ Store² for $500.00³.  Reply AA1234NO if unauthorized. 

 

¹This will be the last four digits of your card number
²This will be the name of the merchant
³This will be the purchase amount

If you receive this message and you know the purchase is legitimate, you don’t need to do anything.  If you think that it’s fraud, you reply “AA1234NO” and your card will be blocked.  

 

A few things to know – 

 

Enrollments will be good for a period of one year.  You will be notified prior to the expiration of your Guardian account and may text a reply to renew. 

 

Changing your mobile service provider may require you to re-enroll your mobile device.

 

The cell phone or mobile device must have the ability to send and receive text messages and the use of “short codes” must not be blocked.  Short codes are special telephone numbers, often five digits long, which are used to send text messages from mobile phones.

You are responsible for any text messaging fees from your phone or tablet service provider.

If you are planning a trip out of state or out of the country, it would be a good idea to notify us before you leave.  Additionally, if you are making a purchase outside of your “normal” spending pattern or in excess of $1,000, please notify us before you attempt the transaction to ensure you are not inconvenienced with a transaction denial.

 

For travel notifications, please be prepared to provide us with the dates and destination of your upcoming travel along with the last four digits of the card number.  For transactions that exceed $1,000, please provide us with the dollar amount of the transaction and the name of the merchant or type of transaction, i.e. car repair in addition to the last four digits of your card number.

What is EMV?

 

The terms EMV and chip are often used interchangeably.  EMV is an open-standard set of specifications for smart card payments and acceptance devices which was developed by Europay, MasterCard® and Visa® to ensure interoperability between chip-based payment cards and terminals.

 

Why are countries migrating to EMV?

 

Issuers around the world are including chips in their cards and merchants are moving to EMV-compliant terminals to increase security and reduce fraud resulting from counterfeit, lost and stolen cards.

 

What are the benefits of EMV?

 

The biggest benefit of EMV is the reduction in card fraud resulting from counterfeit, lost and stolen cards.  EMV also provides interoperability with the global payments infrastructure – consumers with EMV chip payment cards can use their card on any EMV-compatible payment terminal.  EMV technology supports enhanced cardholder verification methods and, unlike magnetic stripe cards, EMV payment cards can also be used to secure online payment transactions.

 

Why are EMV credit and debit cards and EMV chip payment transactions secure?

 

EMV secures the payment transaction with enhanced functionality.  EMV cards store payment information in a secure chip rather than on a magnetic stripe and the personalization of EMV cards is done using issuer-specific keys.  This helps to prevent card skimming and card cloning, one of the common ways magnetic stripe cards are compromised and used for fraudulent activity.  Even if fraudsters are able to steal account data from chip transactions, this data cannot be used to create a fraudulent transaction in an EMV chip or magnetic stripe environment, since very EMV transaction carries dynamic data.   Additionally, EMV can also address card-not-present (CNP) fraud, with cardholders using their EMV chip cards and individual readers to authenticate internet transactions.  Unlike a magnetic stripe card, it is virtually impossible to create a counterfeit EMV card that can be used to conduct an EMV payment transaction successfully.

 

What is the impact of EMV adoption on payment card fraud?

 

Countries implementing EMV chip card payments have reported a decrease in card fraud. 

 

When will SMW 104 Federal Credit Union be implementing EMV (chip cards)?

 

We have been working diligently over the past months to throughly test and get ready to implement EMV cards to all SMW 104 Federal Credit Union Visa cardholders.  We anticipate credit cards rolling-out first in January 2016, followed by debit cards. 

 

Will cardholders with EMV cards have issues paying for purchases in the U.S.?

 

Currently, all EMV chip cards also have a magnetic stripe, so that those cards can be used in regions and countries that have not deployed EMV. 

 

How does EMV address payment fraud?

 

The EMV chip card includes a secure microprocessor chip that can store information securely and perform cryptographic processing during a payment transaction.  Chip cards carry security credentials that are encoded by the card issuer.
